There has been a rise in the MOBA genre of MMO games recently, and if you have ever played one you can see why, in this blog we will bring you 5 of our favorites. A MOBA game, or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena is a game where small teams of players, often 5 work together to destroy the base of your enemies, another team of 5 players. It sounds easy, but it’s not and there are lots of tactics involved, as well as a few twists and turns that the games bring for you too.
In pretty much every game there is a huge range of characters for you to choose from, often falling into a certain category such as Warrior or Support. Each class has unique skills and abilities that complement those of other classes and finding a balance is important. Sometimes you are just in a random group and it does not quite work, but in a pre made team with friends you can really get a tough set up going.
What makes these games really stand out is their intense and fast paced action. The tide of battle can turn in seconds sometimes and knowing when to press, or to retreat is a vital skill you need to survive. Whether you play in the PvP tournaments or against the game the action is what brings you in and gets you hooked, and each of these below games has plenty of both!
Heroes of Newerth is a huge game with millions of players all over the world, and the setting pits your characters into one of two teams: Hellbourne and Legion. With over 120 heroes to pick from and 3 or 5 player matches there is a lot of action here, and there are a lot of players for you to find and join with or defeat.
In Smite you can become a god, or goddess. While that is immense fun unfortunately your opponents are also gods, but in this game you can choose from a huge range of them. Representing many different modern and mythical religions you can stride into battle as the Goddess Kali, or wield thunder as the Mighty Thor. Blended with one of the best graphics engines and a new style this game is stunning to play.
A slightly older game, but still great Infinite Crisis is set in the DC Comics universe, and many different worlds are being torn apart, so heroes and villains from multiple universes are fighting to prepare for the coming war. The Joker is trying to Kill the Flash while Superman is battering the Green Lantern into the floor in this intense and fun game.
Shards of War is one of the newest crop of games and you choose your Sentinel and step into possibly the fastest MOBA around. With a unique arena set up, lots of minions to fight and unique objectives there is a lot to make this game stand out. Mix in the amazing graphics and interesting characters and suddenly you have a really good game.
No list is complete really without the simply brilliant League of Legends. While not the first MOBA it is certainly one of the most well known and played all over the world. With its own E-Sports league to boot and so many characters to choose from it is no wonder that this game remains so popular. Stepping into the arena here is perhaps one of the best experiences out there and this is one game you really should play if you like this genre.
