If you’ve never heard about Ragnarok Online before, you might have been living under a rock these past few years. It’s a long-running RPG which has been around for more than 10 years, and it is arguably one of the games which revolutionized MMORPGs and is one of the most notable mainstream ones. It defined the childhood of numerous gamers, and if you play it today, you’ll find that it has never lost its charm.
One of the biggest draws of Ragnarok is its large, expansive world wrought with monsters, dungeons, and landscapes to explore. The landscape varies: you will be able to explore the sandy dunes and mummy-filled pyramids of Morroc, and go around the dungeons of eastern-themed Payon, and its dungeons filled with the mischievous Munak. If you’re looking for a place to chill, cool yourself off in Lutie, the snow village, or just go shopping in the merchant’s section in Prontera. The game has been updated over time, and it has newer towns like Gonryun, Rachel, and Lighthalzen.
Apart from the towns, its dungeons and fields are fantastic. Considering you’ll need to go through several maps - or use the Kafra service - to go to different cities, you’ll never run out of places to explore. Such places include the Culvert, an underground sewage system where the Golden Thief Bug lies in wait, and the Orc Village, where the powerful race of demi-humans reside. If you’re looking for more of a thrill, stop by at Turtle Island, or at Glast Heim, the former capital of the Rune Kingdom which now lies in ruins and is filled with overpowered undead and unholy monsters.
Ragnarok Online’s class tree is large and quite complicated. There are dozens of classes, or “jobs”, as they are called in the game which you can choose. Everybody starts off as a novice, and once you reach level 12, you can choose from the following first jobs: Swordsman, Magician, Thief, Merchant, Archer, and Acolyte. Once your job level reaches level 40, you can then proceed to the 2nd job, which is basically an upgrade of your first job. You’ll have two options, and for example, a Swordsman can choose to become a Knight or Paladin, while a Thief can be an Assassin or a Rogue. There are also third jobs, which are stronger versions of the 2nd jobs. Regardless, you will have a lot of options to choose from, so pick one according to your play style!
Ragnarok Online’s monsters are beautifully designed, and each has its own lore and backstory. From newbie monsters like the Poring, Drops, Fabre, and Chonchon, to mid-tier ones like the watery Obeaune, hard-hitting Vadon, and the brutish Orc Warrior. The boss monsters are extremely powerful, and these include the popular scythe-wielding goat-like demon Baphomet, the Dark Lord, the pipe-smoking tiger Eddga, and the disfigured monstrosity known as Beelzebub. It may take a whole guild to take one down, so it would be best not to go alone!
You can acquire pets in Ragnarok, but they are more of a cosmetic element than a practical one. Regardless, if you have the upkeep, you’d like to have them around.
One of the main draws of Ragnarok is its social features. You can “get married” to another character, or even “adopt” another character who can become your child. A lot of people in real life have started their relationships in the game, so it’s all quite endearing. If you’re tired of killing monsters, you can go ahead and enjoy the game’s PvP features: fight against other players, or join a guild and test your mettle in guild wars.
