The long-waited mobile version of The Atelier series – Alchemist of Bressisle released in Japan is finally here. This established Japanese adventure role-playing game series made its first debut on mobile platform, hoping to incorporate the accessible playability into The Atelier series. Atelier Online was released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Atelier series by bringing various elements and popular characters from previous games of the series into an equally exciting and engaging free-to-play mobile game. As the name implies, the story takes place on Bressisle Island. The protagonist is an apprentice alchemist who starts his journey from the Academy of Albus and decides to travel across seven regions of Bressisle Island after taking on the quest to collect all the missing pieces of the Pyroxene of Wisdom.

In Atelier Online, as the protagonist bearing the hope of the future, you are the star student who was raised at the Royal Academy and now wishes to be a full-fledged alchemist. In the academy, you made friends with Sorrel and Anise, who are an apprentice mage and an apprentice sage, respectively. They join you early in the storyline, and you can take them into combat by adding them to your party. Atelier is an alchemy-themed RPG that focuses heavily on alchemy, so synthesizing materials is vital in the game. You can gather the materials needed for alchemy from the field. Occasionally, you have to fight monsters to get rare materials. However, some materials will only appear at a certain time of day in the game world. There are three types of alchemy categories, namely item, equipment, and cuisine. You can synthesize both usable items and quest items as long as you have the required recipe. You can obtain equipment such as weapons and armors by completing quests, or you can choose to craft your own gears. The cuisine in Atelier online is different from most of the Atelier series. The food is not intended for healing in this game but as an item to enhance the character’s innate stats.

Despite being a game that relies heavily on alchemy synthesis, combat is still somewhat important in Atelier Online. Its turn-based combat has always been a distinctive feature of the series. After all, the items and gears you have crafted are not for nothing because those crafted items will come in handy in the battles while you traverse across the Bressisle Island. For those who dislike combat, the combat can be automated and sped up. While you may want to complete the journey alone, Atelier Online offers a multiplayer mode in which you can invite up to three other friends to join your party. It is worth noting that some of the quests are only available in multiplayer mode as the monsters are very strong, so working with friends will increase your chances of winning the battle.

Atelier Online uses two currencies, the Cole and Ether. Cole is obtainable from daily rewards and quests. However, if you need a little extra boost, Cole is also purchasable with real money through in-app purchases. Cole is used to buy certain shop items or exchanged for Gacha rolls, in which you can get rare gears and characters that can generally carry you through the game. On the other hand, Ether is the common currency that you will get after completing quests or selling items. Ether is essential as it is required for synthesizing and enhancing items. The graphic is unexpectedly appealing with its pastel-colored visuals, and the characters are beautifully portrayed. The soundtrack is also pleasant, and players will definitely love the lively and engaging Japanese voice-acting throughout the game. Since the game was first developed in Japanese, the English translation can be further improved.

Comparison is unavoidable when a mobile game has its roots from a console game – the existing Atelier fans would like to know whether the Atelier Online feels like an Atelier game. It is undeniably a new experience to play Atelier on your mobile phone with a great amount of playability and accessibility but has not strayed too far from its original game’s theme and concepts. In Atelier Online, you will encounter your favorites characters from the series again. At the same time, you get to meet with new characters as well. Joint battles are unique in this title and add a little more spice to an already interesting series.

For those who are new to Atelier, you must try this out as the story is independent of the series, which means the storyline will not leave you pondering on what you have missed earlier. In fact, you can experience a more laid-back playstyle in Atelier Online compare to the series. Let us not dally any longer, and embark on the journey of becoming the best alchemist in Bressisle!
