You start the game by choosing one of the nine available classes, all of them have strong eastern culture influence such as monk, taoist and ninja. Each class has it’s own set of skills and fighting style. You can only have one character in a server, but there are many servers you can play, allowing you to try other characters easily. At level 70 you can also choose a sub-class, providing you access to more abilities and unique characteristics.
Conquer Online 2 is heavily PVP oriented but contains quite a lot of content for the casual player. There are many different quests scattered around the vast world, which provides a big amount of experience and items for your character. The game features a auto-pathfinding system which helps a lot navigating from one quest giver to another. The quests are varied and are rather interactive as many of them are not simple “slay X monsters” which makes for a much more interesting game experience.
As always in MMORPGs, you improve your hero by gaining levels, find better items and improve your skills. Levels are gained pretty quickly in Conquer Online, at least in the first 40-50 levels, after that it get slower to gain levels from quests, but the experience rate is still rather high compared to other games. Higher levels allow you to equip stronger items and will grant you access to more skills.
As for items, monsters doesn't drop many items you can use and the best items for your current level are usually gained from quests, but through random item boxes which can give you different items, making it a different game for different players according to your item picks and quests. Items can be repaired if damaged and upgraded in various ways in order to improve their stats as well as socketing for extra effects. Boss monsters might also drop items, the stronger the monster, the higher tier items can drop.
There are many different skills, some are passive but most of them are active you can equip and use during battle. Skills gain experience when you use them, increasing their power as they level up. Skills level slowly, but are usually spammable, so eventually you will be able to upgrade them as long as you keep using them.
Conquer Online 2 features a world wide Player Kill system, players can kill each other anywhere except in towns, which can be a bit annoying when you are busy farming for quests and someone comes and kills you. However, you don’t seem to lose much from dying so it is a small hindrance. When you kill other players your PK score increases as you kill more players, but it decreases in time.
The game play of Conquer Online is decent, the controls can be a bit tricky as sometimes skill and attack commands doesn't register instantly, and there are short delays in conversations and item usage. The auto fighting feature works well but you can’t use auto pick items if you are not a VIP player. The interface is rich and a bit cluttered, there are help tabs on many things, but better tool tips are required for better understanding of the game.
The game graphics are lacking, especially for a download game, the game looks similar to browser based games which hurts the game’s appeal when considering you need to download it and expect better graphics. The music is also underwhelming, the eastern theme is cool, but there is little variance and innovation.
Conquer Online 2 has enough redeeming qualities to make it a pretty popular and fun game, it is simple and has interesting lore behind it, with plenty of content to explore and enough character customization to keep you busy. Some improvements in the graphics department will make the game much better, but for now it is a good game if you are looking for a simple and fun PVP MMORPG. Conquer Online Summary
