Commercially released in 2005 by Mirinae Software, Khan: The Absolute Power is one of the longest running MMORPG franchise in Asia to date. Though the crowd may have dwindled through the years, the game is still very much on-line retaining its immersive game play which made it very popular for almost a decade.

This is the type of MMORPG that pulls crowds of young people into internet Cafes/computer rental shops scattered all over Asia akin to the StarCraft phenomenon that turned South Korea into the bastion of E-sports in Asia.

Based on the Free2Play model, the game contains a micro-transaction concept with the use of E-cards or game load cards. You want an item, armor, weapon or skill, and you don’t have the patience to earn this in-game, you can simply buy an e-card or e-load to get the game features that you want.

Sadly, time has caught up with the game and the competition has been fierce as more free2play MMO’s get released every year crowding the games market and competing for the gamer crowd’s short lived attention. Nevertheless, Khan Online is still out there and was recently released on Steam gaining a very strong access portal for gamers not just in Asia but around the world.

This is a strong game in a sense that it has a community of players that continue to support, play and promote the game. The graphics may be old but the game play is fluid and the music is pleasant to hear and varies appropriately according to the situations happening in the game.

Khan Online is based on a storyline of Genghis Khan uniting both Asia and Europe to fight an evil tyrant named Gaiser the Absolute. Fueled by revenge, greed, anger and pure blood lust, Gaiser and his army are determined to dominate and rule the world. Only Khan and his assembly of brave heroes stand in the Gaiser’s way.

Starting the game from Steam, you log-into a server that’s available for your area. Once inside, you have the option to form a group of 3 characters or go it alone. Regardless, you will eventually encounter quests where you will have to join forces with other online players to complete it.

There are 6 character types to choose from. The Cleric (Female) who specializes in healing and resurrecting the dead. The Knight (Male) who happens to be very good with close combat melee weapons, The Sorcerer (Male) with mage like abilities that can harness the forces of nature and turn them into deadly weapons of Attack.

The Micko (Female) is a special character who can be both an Archer and Cleric at the same time. The Assassin (Female) is a Ninja babe whose deadly stealth is a weapon in itself. Finally, the Necromancer (Female) is the one that delves into magics and spells from protecting allies or summoning monstrous beasts.

Most of the characters are female and very very good looking as Khan was one of those early online games that set the standard for the Asian looking “Babe” female game character common in today’s MMO games. The artwork may not be perfect but superb nonetheless.

You start at the town of Karakorum where you will have to talk to the NPC’s (mostly the shop owners who stand in front of their shops located all over town). They will then ask favors (quests) which if you oblige will earn you Gold and Ki or something else. Most of this involves combat with monsters, or errands like bringing some item to another NPC in another town. Shops are the common ones you find in almost any RPG. Grocery, Apothecary, Armor and Weapons Shop etc. etc.

Gameplay is fast, furious and very addictive especially when you find out how to use what you got. Like if you’re a Sorcerer, you can choose a melee weapon that you’re current character stats can handle or your force weapons like an ice cold sphere you can throw at them. Armor, robes and other protective gear are available at the shops for each character class and so with weapons. There are potions, spells, and other useful items that can be bought, earned or picked-up on the battlefield after doing away with an opponent.

Traveling to other Townships is done through teleportation. Just look for the Teleport Guy (there’s always one in town) and have yourself zapped to wherever you want to go. Oh yeah, pay 200gold first. Six exotic locations all within a blink of an eye (click on Gate to teleport).

There’s a help screen with all the commands you need to know (and I have know idea where to find those you have to know) by pressing the “H” key. Options, Inventory, Stats, Map, etc. etc. they’re there.

Finally when against a whole bunch of enemies running after you, use your best judgment. Have your heal potions ready and think out your attacks. A lot of times, a head-on collision just won’t do. Better use those Ninja moves, escape with your live and collect your rewards afterwards.

If you happen to be like me who loves roaming around big open spaces inside sparsely populated game servers and not like me who happens to have very little time to play games (bummer…), give Khan Online a try. Log-in and be immersed in a beautifully done game world. After all, it’s free. Khan Online Summary
