At first, there was DOTA. Defense of the Ancients was and still is one of the most popular online maps in warcraft 3. DOTA became so popular that it basically created a genre of it own of group pvp games, resulting in several DOTA like games such as League of Legends, also known as LoL.
League of Legends is one of the most popular versions of DOTA that are available for free as it features plenty of champions, a steep learning curve and some intense action.
If you are not familiar with DOTA then here are the basics: there are two teams of five players each in a map with three lanes guarded by towers as each team controls one half of the map. Each team has a base with a Nexus and your goal is to destroy your enemy’s nexus. From each base minions will spawn and walk along the lanes, fighting minions and other champions they encounter. Killing minions, towers and of course enemy champions will give the player experience and gold used to purchase items from the store in order to win the match.
In LoL you play as a summoner, one that can call upon champions for his aid in battle. at the beginning of each game you pick your champion, there are almost a hundred of champions to choose from, but most of them are locked until you purchase them from the game shop. The free champions list rotates every week, allowing you to test new champions and see others in action before you purchase them. Each champion has it’s own unique abilities and stats, the information about the heroes is very detailed, with videos showing their abilities, data about their strengths and weaknesses and tips of how to play them well. There is also a bit of lore on each champion, giving some background and insight to their personality.
As a summoner you don’t only choose and play the champion, as you win games you gain levels and influence-points, each level you receive a mastery point to spend in your mastery page, these are passive bonuses that will benefit your champion, you can change them before each game and set pre-made pages as you alternate between champions. New levels will also unlock more rune slots where you can place runes you purchase with your influence points to enhance your champion. Each summoner can have two special skills to use during the battle, these skills have long cool-down and are crucial in most games so as always pick skills that will complement your current champion. leveling will also unlock additional abilities as well.
League of Legends is pretty simple to learn and hard to master, the sheer amount of champions and their specialization, combined with the masteries and rune system makes for a challenging and rewarding game, even in practice mode against bots, they can be a formidable foe. League of Legends is action packed with intense battles and split second decisions that will decide whether you live or die. Team work is essential for winning, as well as picking the right opponent and moment to attack. However, the game can be quite frustrating as one bad player (or simply with bad luck) or someone who has disconnected can tip the scales drastically to the opponent's favor.
LoL also features a Dominion game style, where you and your team members fight for control over key points and need to hold them for a certain amount of time in order to win.
When you think you played enough against bots, go to the pvp section and battle other players for the ultimate showdown of skills.
Knowledge is power, and LoL provides you in game with all the information you need, not only there are detailed explanations about your skills and stats, upon death you can view your death recap detailing the damage and skills that were used to kill you as well as providing tips on how to fight the champion. Knowing your enemy and how to avoid his skills in time is what makes a good player. You can also see the items each player is using which is great when figuring the right items for your character.
