When one gazes at the night sky away from the city lights, one is able to see the multitude of stars that litter the vastness of space. Long has man dreamt of visiting those stars, searching for other planets with life and boldly go where no man has gone before.

However, the starship Enterprise is not alone in it’s quest as the thought of conquering outer space is shared by so many from our planet called Earth. The good news is you can also do that now in front of your PC in the comfort of your home with a game called Stardrift Empires.

Initially released by Blue Frog Gaming as a Facebook app, Stardrift Empire is actually an enhanced version of Blue Frogs previous game Starfleet Commander. The game is PBBS or Browser Based and can be played today via their own website. It’s Free2Play and has the usual micro-transactions, but the game offers a way for you to go around the spending real-money-option by earning the in-game currency you will need via a nifty monetization feature of the game that requires you to do some short and simple online tasks for a few online affiliates in exchange for the needed in-game amount.

Tasks will range from simply answering on-line survey questions to subscribing to a free-trial of an online service. You can choose the tasks you feel comfortable with as each option has an equivalent amount for in-game currency. That way, you don’t need to spend at all just to get on with the game.

However, Stardrift Empire is kind of a different form of Strategy Game genre. Not all gamers would appreciate it and probably a lot will get really bored with it. You can’t see your forces floating on your screen as your starships engage the enemy and your fighters swarm the opponent’s capital ships and engage their fighters as well. This is not Homeworld or Star Wars Galactic Empires with all those awesome animations and cool sound effects.

Stardrift Empires is a management simulations game. Not exactly the kind of resource management you do with Warcraft or Warhammer 40K. Close, but then again, not really. The game can be labeled RTS since the actions you do and decisions you make affect the game in real time but the game has a very passive feel to it.

For starters, the game uses static images to convey such things as events, structures and locations in the game. The artwork though is really good and is able to display the space operatic theme of the game. The game is text based. Almost everything is conveyed by text and pictures and actions are performed by clicking buttons and navigating menus.

For those who have been playing games since the 1980’s, this kind of game play is something we sort of started with. First it was all text, then text and pictures, then text, pictures and menus until animation was added and so on and so forth. It may kind of look really boring, the fact that the developers could have at least added some sounds and appropriate music instead of the silence that comes with the game.

Regardless, for those who appreciate a good management simulations game, Stardrift Empires will provide hours of deep thought and decision making as you make your way through the game building your space empire and claiming territories in the vastness of space.

You can visit their site and register for free. You then choose your avatar from a group of characters though it really doesn’t matter as they’re all ugly anyway. Then, there’s this cute but weird looking chic that explains things to you (in text) and leads you through a very very basic tutorial. Once you’ve done that, pffft… she’s nowhere to be found and you’re suddenly on your own.

From the main game page, you have access to several other pages. Just click on the name of that page and the game will take you there. Each page has activities and actions you can perform by clicking again on the required buttons. Game options pages include Home, Fleets, Galaxy, Tech, and Badges among others. Game activity pages include Building, research, Mission, shipyard, Defense and others. Also, there’s a special Wiki page that can be accessed by clicking it at the bottom of the game screen. That’s your manual.

Each page is actually a part or division of the overall game. The building page lets you manage the construction of important structures and facilities like an Ore Mine, a Crystal Mine or a Solar Array. The Mission page lets you decide which missions to undertake like hauling cargo with your ships or perhaps raiding an undefended resource mine from opponents which would preferably be the NPC’s in the game.

PVP option is an available feature as you are not the only one trying to conquer space but most players would prefer to hit the NPC’s as making enemies with other on-line players might prove detrimental to one’s space building operations in the long run. Making an alliance however seems to be the more positive approach.

You will need resources and credits which can be earned via in-game lotteries, completing quest which are your overall objectives or visiting the store with their non-cash and real money options. An example would be workers to man your mines and refineries. If you visit the Factory page, you will see that Androids are available for the labor required but they cost game-mula and you’ve got only around 10K credits to begin with.

Missions you complete will earn you badges and rewards. However, there are things or activities that require some pre-requisites in order to perform or attain them. A good example would be defense which can only be achieved by having a shipyard first to build your fleet.

This are some of the game elements shared with today’s action packed RTS where you do need a Mech-Factory or Garage to build that Tank much needed to augment your troops to defend against an upcoming enemy assault. Stardrift Empires have this too but it takes time to accomplish and almost everything takes time and a lot of deep thought.

So if you like this kind of gaming to relax and indulge with instead of a game of computer Chess, do fix yourself a nice cup of warm coffee or chocolate, fire up the old Star Wars symphony, take your place in front of your PC and manage your way through the galaxy.
