For those who love FPS gaming and haven’t played Unreal or Unreal Tournament in any iteration, my advice is to do so. These games are (till today), the “Cream of the Crop” as far as competitive FPS Sci-Fi games go. Unreal provided the kind of brutal survival shooter challenge which kept the gamer’s Adrenaline pounding almost every minute of the game, and the kind of Dopamine Rush when the team or the player wins the round or game and performs the “Pelvic Thrust”. It was the kind of fast-paced, ferocious, and satisfyingly savage challenge that the hard-core FPS gaming crowd of the veteran gamer era lived for.
Unreal Tournament 2004, or UT2004, has earned quite a reputation for itself and is considered to be the definitive version of the game that balances both the earlier game versions, from Unreal Tournament OG, Gold, and UT2003, and the UT iterations that came after UT2004. On this note, UT2003 and 2004 are very much alike, as the latter can be considered an awesome advancement or update of the former. There were game features and maps that were added that made the overall gameplay much more challenging and interesting.
For many who get to play UT2004 today, courtesy of Epic’s game preservation initiative, playing the game will be pure, unbridled, and exhilarating gaming nostalgia! For those newly experiencing the game today, it will provide one a view, and a chance to experience the kind of intense gaming that defined the fast-paced competitive game world of the late 90s and the 2000s, when gamers played using CRT monitors and Pentium-based PCs. To this, let’s take a look at what Unreal Tournament 2004 (a classic and a legend among FPS games) will, and is still bringing to the table in FPS/MMOFPS gaming today.
Unreal Tournament 2004 brings back both the Red and the Blue up against each other once again. It’s a never-ending contest of grit, strategy, tactics, quick reflexes, and chaotic mayhem. The game’s game modes provide the core of the challenging gameplay, and whether you are playing with a team or going it alone, these game modes, along with the variety of battle (arena) maps included with the game, will provide the twists, dodges, turns, and objective challenges worth your while.
Challenges include game modes like “Capture The Flag”, where you hump it all the way to the enemy base, grab their flag, and get it back to your base, or get a teammate to do it for you in case “You be Dead!”. “Assault” is another mode where one team attacks, the other defends. “Double Domination” requires teams to keep holding 2 points on the map, and “Bombing Run”, where teams score by shooting a ball into the enemy goal. Of course, “Deathmatch” and “Team Deathmatch” will always be around, plus “Last Man Standing,” which is Deathmatch with limited lives. A “Mutant” mode is included where one player is given mutant abilities but everyone else must bring him down. Finally, unlike the earlier UT titles, UT2004 has combat vehicle availability from buggies to tanks and even space fighters. The “Onslaught” mode provides large-scale, vehicle-based combat with the objective of obliterating your opponent’s core.
The introduction of combat vehicles to the game was a deciding feature that advanced UT2004 from the usual UT gameplay, where one had to propel oneself through the battlefield.
Unreal Tournament is known to have the most well-designed battle maps (or locations) in FPS gaming history. Many of these maps have been based on proven iconic designs, good to excellent gameplay flow, and overall challenges. Many of them have become quite memorable to veteran UT players over the years and have become standard map references for many other games.
Many of the maps have been specifically designed for a particular gameplay mode. In Capture the Flag, maps like CTF-Colossus, CTF-Face 3, or classic, a reimagining of the iconic UT OG Facing Worlds map, and CTF-Magma, a dangerous lava-filled environment that forces players to go through narrow and dangerous pathways, are among many other maps.
Other maps are for Deathmatch gameplay, like the DM-Gael, well known for its well-balanced layout for competitive gameplay. There are maps for Assault mode like AS-HiSpeed, the classic UT map where players fight on top of a speeding train. Then, since UT2004 includes combat vehicles, there are the Onslaught (Vehicle) Maps. These include maps like ONS-IslandHop, a map that features island hopping and boat-based combat gameplay, and ONS-Primeval, a jungle-based map that provides a claustrophobic feel to vehicular combat.
These examples are just a few, and UT2004 is loaded with game maps that will take time for a determined player to go through. What’s more, the UT gaming and modding community has been active over the years, providing the game with a sizeable selection of community-made maps.
So now, despite all those years, any gamer today worth his or her FPS salt will enjoy playing the game. The game itself may be a bit old at the 22-year mark, but the gaming “Never Grows Old”. By current-day graphics standards, UT2004 is a game of the past. However, this game of the past, or these games of the past should you include the other Unreal and UT titles, are Classic and legendary games of the past. Once you start playing and get immersed in the frantic combat, you’ll get my drift.
Yes, the graphics are old, UT2004 came out in 2004 for the PCs of that time, but with the “Preservation Initiative” and the “OldUnreal Project” to bring the game up to date in order to run as smoothly as can be in today’s modern-day PCs, the game has been practically brought to life. Updates include the (UI) User Interface, the audio quality, performance quality, Windows 10, 11, and Linux compatibility, and many more. If you don’t mind playing retro-games, chances are, you will love this game, and you can get your free updated copy at OldUnreal UT2004, and if you’ve played it back then, then welcome back to the kind of gaming the made Unreal and Unreal tournament just that, Unreal!
