Piloting a mech has always been a childhood dream of many. Games like Armored Core and the Gundam series are fresh on the minds of many fans of the genre. If you’re looking for a way to hone your mech piloting skills on the Android and iOS, War Robots is the game you should be playing. The mobile gaming scene is dominated by titles which are turn-based or have a limited online capacity, like you being forced to fight against AI characters. War Robots is played real-time, and the enemy opponents you face are controlled by real players. You’re free to control your robot hands on, much like an arcade game.
Before you start firing machine guns and missiles, you will first need to learn the basics. Your primary task is to select a low-level robot. Your options are limited at first, but as you progress into higher levels, you will be able to buy stronger robots from the shop, whether by hard-earned AG silver or through premium AU points. Take note that the robots vary in appearance and attributes: they’re fairly unique, and have different strengths and weaknesses. For example, one may be slow, but packed in firepower, while another may be armed with lighter weapons but is insanely fast.
One of the downsides of the weapon purchasing and robot upgrading processes is the waiting mechanic. When you purchase an upgrade, you need to wait hours - I repeat, HOURS - for it to be fitted and completed. Moreover, you can only upgrade one part at a time. Of course, you wouldn’t have to wait if you pay for real money. It’s not a blatant cash grab by any means (since the devs have to earn), but it can be irritating if your patience isn’t your strongest suit. The more weapons you have, the more upgrades you’ll need to perform, and the more time you will be spending on waiting.
Despite the rather poor upgrading mechanic, the combat system stands out compared to other freemium titles. Although the robots are essentially bipedal mechs and move slowly, the 6v6 battles are quick and fast-paced. Each usually lasts less than five minutes, and you can’t exactly go full Rambo on your opponents. A little strategy and teamwork is needed to turn your opponents into scrap metal. Apart from obliterating your opponents, you can also capture all bases to secure the W.
Assuming you’re actually playing against humans, the developers have to be commended for employing a smooth and quick matchmaking scheme. It usually takes less than 30 seconds to find another match.
