Ikariam is a browser based online MMORTS game with a theme that reminiscent of the Roman era which is combined with stellar RTS gameplay and a variety of different features such as researching and diplomacy to create an RTS that is relatively easy to get into but a truly complex game to fully master.
When you start off in Ikariam you’ll only have a simple town center and some landing surrounding it to your name. It’s your duty to turn this empty patch of land into a flourishing and fearsome empire by properly managing it, creating buildings, hiring people to work in different areas and by waging wars against other players in the game to assert your dominance upon them.
For players who are new to MMORTS games, getting familiar with the core features of Ikariam will be a breeze as the game has a really nice tutorial phase during the early stages of the game that explains in-depth most of the core gameplay aspects you need to know and once you’ve fully gone through it you’re given a substantial reward and will have all the information necessary to set yourself on track to creating a massive empire.
The gameplay of Ikariam is pretty much as good as it gets for a browser based MMORTS. There’s an insane amount of things you can do in the game and there will also be a multitude of things that you have to keep track of if you want your empire to operate optimally. All the traditional elements of MMORTS games like building armies and creating new structures are here but these are combined with new features such as researching to gain access to better quality equipment for your soldiers and making friends through diplomatic means to further secure your empire.
One minor flaw in Ikariam is that a lot of the things in the game are restricted to the new players. You’ll only have access to the basic infantry and won’t be able to gather any resource other than wood during the early stages of the game so Ikariam takes a while to fully pick up the pace and bring players the full experience.
Ikariam is a very neatly presented game. The user-interface is sleek and doesn’t take up a lot of space on the screen. You’ll easily be able to navigate to any menu in the game within a few clicks due to how well designed they are. The graphics look pretty good as well especially considering that this is a browser based game.
There are of course micro-transactions that you can choose to go through if you wish to please. Through these micro-transactions you’ll be able to get access to the premium currency of Ambrosia and through Ambrosia you can purchase a variety of things such as resources or general stat boosts.
